Ireland will be represented at a meeting of UN officials in New York today that will discuss plans to deploy a 15,000-strong peacekeeping force in Lebanon.
Ireland is one of 45 potential troop-contributing states invited to attend the meeting at 8.30pm (Irish time).
No member state has made a definite commitment to the Unifil (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) force.
Rules of engagement will also form an important part of the discussions.
Crucial to this will be whether or not the force will be expected to help in the disarming of Hizbullah.
Lebanese troops this morning began moving into position in southern Lebanon, but they are still awaiting the arrival of a significant consignment of UN troops to help man the 'buffer zone' between the Litani River and the Israeli border.
Israel's five week offensive on Lebanon ended at the start of the week after over 1,100 Lebanese and 150 Israelis died.
