Ireland's only multicultural newspaper, Metro Éireann, was relaunched yesterday as a weekly publication.

Before a large gathering in Dublin, the paper was relaunched by editor Chinedu Onyejelem, supporters Denis O'Brien, chairman of Digicel, Eoin McVey, managing editor of The Irish Times and novelist Roddy Doyle

Mr Onyejelem said what they wanted to do in Metro Éireann was provide a one-stop channel of communication between Irish people and immigrants so that they could learn about each other.

Mr McVey said Metro Éireann reflected the future of Irish society with its multicultural and rich diversity of people. It was the voice of the new Irish people who deserved every support, he said.

Mr O'Brien said the paper had come of age in moving from a monthly to a weekly. He said Irish people should buy the paper as it gave a better understanding of the 175 different nationalities in Ireland. It was a two-way street.

Contributor Roddy Doyle said he had written a short story every month for the paper over the past six-and-a-half years.

The paper will be out every Thursday and in addition to all the latest news from ethnic communities, it will also include current affairs, analysis, entertainment, sports and business news.
