Ireland is to become involved in a number of major European Space Agency (ESA) programmes.

Among the projects Ireland will participate in is the ARTES programme that seeks to develop advance satellite communications technology leading to improved multimedia products and services.

The programme is aimed at a broad industry base, ranging from small-to medium-sized enterprises to large space companies, satellite communication operators and service providers.

The Minister for Science, Technology and Commerce Mr Noel Treacy made the announcement at the launch of Science Week at the Sligo Institute of technology.

The news follows a two-day conference in Edinburgh. Mr Treacy said around £50m would be contributed over the next five years.

The Minister told the conference that the investment will ensure Irish high technology firms and researchers continue to play a key role in European and global space activities.

He said it would enhance the opportunity for Irish companies to exploit leading edge technologies in aerospace and telecommunications markets.

Ireland will also participate in the Galileo satellite navigation programme which will co-ordinate with businesses the development of independent navigation services in areas such as road vehicle navigation and air traffic control.

Ireland will also participate in a number of space travel projects including the expansion of the Arianne satellite launcher programme and the General Space Support Technology Programme.
