Ireland drawn away to Hungary in Davis Cup

Tennis: Ireland has been drawn to play Hungary away in round one of the Davis Cup Euro/Africa Zone Group II next February.

Tennis:Ireland has been drawn to play Hungary away in round one of the Davis Cup Euro/Africa Zone Group II next February.

Hungary are nine places above Ireland in the Davis Cup rankings, although Ireland have the highest ranked player between the countries, with Conor Niland presently at 206th in the ATP list, 23 places above Hungarian number one Adam Kellner.

The match will take place between February 10th and 12th next year, with a venue set to be finalised by the International Tennis Federation in the coming weeks.

Ireland captain Garry Cahill believes his side have a great chance against their seeded opponents.

“Although the match is away for our team I am confident that we can win this tie. I don’t fear any team in our group,” said Cahill.

Hungary also has the choice of surface, although the staging of the tie in February is likely to see it be played on an indoor hardcourt.

The winners of the tie will meet Egypt or Latvia in round two on April 6th-8th.
