Baghdad - Iraq opened a border crossing point with Iran yesterday for the first time in 17 years, but Iraqi officials and travel agencies said Iranian pilgrims were unlikely to visit Iraq's Shia Muslim shrines immediately.

They said Iraq completed preparations to receive Iranian visitors and several buses left Baghdad yesterday for the Mundhiriya crossing point, 120 km north-west of Baghdad, just in case Iranians did arrive there.
