Iraq handed over its declaration on any nuclear, chemical or biological weapons programmes to UN arms inspectors in Baghdad.

Iraq handed over its declaration on any nuclear, chemical or biological weapons programmes to UN arms inspectors in Baghdad.

The officials, carrying two bags and four cardboard boxes containing thousands of documents, walked into the UN inspectors' headquarters at the Canal Hotel on the outskirts of Baghdad at around 8.05 p.m. (5.05 p.m. Irish time).

The declaration - in which Iraq must give a full accounting of any past and current programmes involving biological, chemical or nuclear weapons - will be flown from Baghdad to Vienna, headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and to New York.

There, it will be given to the UN Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC), which is headed by chief weapons inspector Mr Hans Blix.
