Iraq has delayed bringing counterfeiting charges against politician Mr Ahmad Chalabi, according to one of his aides.

An official in his political party said today Mr Chalabi had not seen the charges and had been informed that they "have been postponed". This means that Iraqi police have no immediate plans to arrest him.

Mr Chalabi, a former ally of the Pentagon, returned from a trip to Iran yesterday to face the charges.

His nephew, Mr Salem Chalabi, the US-educated lawyer who supervises the special tribunal prosecuting Saddam Hussein, was charged with playing a role in the murder of a Finance Ministry official.

Both men have denied the charges and said they were politically motivated.
