Tehran - Iran's parliament was yesterday authorised to investigate the state radio and television monopoly for possible financial irregularities, writes Michael Jansen.

The Islamic Republic's spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, decided an investigation would "ensure the healthy operation of these departments". His surprise decision represents a defeat for the hardline conservatives and boosts the reformists' ability to exert influence over public institutions.
