An inquest into the death of a man whose heart was used to save his dying uncle's life opens today.

Mark Robinson (22) was stabbed 11 times and beaten as he walked home after a night out in the Shantallow area of the Derry after leaving a friend early in the morning of Saturday April 28th, 2001. He died three days later in hospital.

Days before his death Mr Robinson signed an organ donor card after seeing his uncle, Lawrence McMonagle, lying critically ill in hospital.

No one has been charged with his killing. As his family came to terms with the tragedy, Mr McMonagle was flown by air ambulance from City Hospital to the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne where - the day after his nephew's death - surgeons performed a five-hour emergency transplant.
