New Delhi - Dozens of Muslims yesterday gathered outside Delhi's Jama Masjid mosque and burnt an effigy of the British author Salman Rushdie in protest against the grant of an Indian visa to him.

India said last week it had granted a visa to Rushdie, author of The Satanic Verses, to visit his country of origin, provoking a storm of protest from Muslims.
