A round-up of today's other stories in brief.
Youth charged with murder of Brazilian man
A 17-year-old Brazilian youth was yesterday charged with the murder of 33-year-old Claudio Fernandes, who died after being stabbed in the head. The deceased, also from Brazil, was brought to hospital after being found with stab wounds in Duleek, Co Meath, on July 29th last.
The youth, who cannot be named because of his age, was charged with his murder and appeared before Dunleer District Court. Sgt Alf Martyn said the youth did not reply when the charge was put to him.
He has already been charged with assault causing harm and with possession of knives and other articles at Main St, Duleek, on July 29th last. The case was adjourned and the accused was remanded in custody for one month.
Truck owner gets suspended term
The owner of a pick-up truck that was involved in a fatal crash after he allowed another man to drive it without insurance was given a suspended jail sentence yesterday. The man who crashed the truck, Kevin Callan, (23), Greenan, Drumconrath, Co Meath, was sentenced to 18 months in prison earlier this year for dangerous driving causing the death of Miriam Traynor, (35), on the evening of June 29th, 2005.
The truck belonged to Sean Kieran (38), Carrickleck, Kingscourt, Co Meath, who pleaded guilty to allowing Callan to drive the jeep without insurance.
At Dunleer District Court yesterday Kieran's solicitor said his client was not the person responsible for the accident. He said it was a technical breach of the insurance policy, but that all claims would be dealt with by the insurers.
Judge Brennan said that while Kieran had no personal involvement in the accident, it would not have taken place if he had not committed the offence. He imposed a six-month jail sentence and suspended it for two years. He also disqualified him from driving for five years.
€2,000 fine for littering offence
A District Court judge in Co Monaghan heard how the county manager, who was driving his car behind another motorist, saw promotional literature dropping on to the roadway from the vehicle in front and followed it into a farmyard.
Declan Nelson told Judge Sean McBride at Monaghan District Court that he saw the leaflets billowing from a trailer attached to a car being driven by Joseph Treanor, The Square, Ballybay, Co Monaghan, on March 23rd last.
Treanor, who failed to appear in court, was fined €2,000 for creating litter in a public place at Feragh, near Monaghan town, contrary to the Litter Act. He was ordered to pay €600 expenses.
Judge McBride, upon hearing the accused was not present in court, or legally represented, said: "I am going to make an example of this fellow."
He said Treanor had acted very irresponsibly and had not availed of any opportunity to explain his action. He fixed recognisances for an appeal in the sum of €500.
