Body of young man recovered from river

The body of a young man was recovered from the river Fergus in Ennis, Co Clare, last night following a day-long search. It was prompted by a report that a teenager had gone swimming in the early hours of the morning and had not returned.

The alarm was raised at 1am by friends of the youth who became concerned when their companion failed to return to the river bank. Gardaí say they are treating the matter as a tragic accident.

Investigation into shooting continues

An inquest into the death of a well-known criminal who was shot dead in the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) in Dublin last December has been adjourned pending investigations by gardaí.

Gerard Bath Byrne (25), from Ferryman's Crossing, was shot up to five times in the head outside a supermarket on Lower Mayor Street in the IFSC on December 13th, 2006.

Yesterday the Dublin city coroner adjourned the inquest into his death until December following an application by Insp Cliona Richardson of Santry Garda station, who said investigations into Mr Byrne's death were ongoing.

She told the court a file would be sent to the DPP.

Inquest into road death adjourned

The DPP is expected to indicate whether he will take a case regarding the death of a student at Trinity College Dublin in a traffic accident when an inquest into her death reopens in December.

English national Lily Hastings-Bass (20) was struck in a hit-and-run incident on the Rathgar Road on November 26th, 2006. She died on December 7th.

Yesterday the Dublin city coroner adjourned the inquest into Ms Hastings-Bass's death following an application by Insp Cliona Richardson. She said a file was being sent to the DPP.

Man's body taken from sea at Clifden

Gardaí in Connemara have ruled out foul play after a man's body was found floating in the sea yesterday afternoon. The body of the man in his 50s was taken from the water at Beach Road in Clifden.
