Wanderers, IRFU settle pavilion case

The IRFU and Wanderers RFC have settled their High Court action over plans to redevelop Lansdowne Road.

Wanderers said it had reached agreement with the IRFU over the demolition of the club pavilion. The club had been holding out for a compensation package.

The IRFU said it was disappointed that the matter went to the courts in the first place and should have been settled months ago.

Court challenge on immigration law

A Syrian national living in Ireland for more than a decade has brought a High Court challenge to the Minister for Justice's alleged failure to inform him of changes to the immigration laws when he was applying to become a naturalised Irish citizen.

Sufian Al Aswad (30), Belarmine Square, Stepaside, Dublin, wants the court to direct the Minister to consider his naturalisation application. He also wants a declaration that he has satisfied the period of residence for his application to be considered.

Mr Al Aswad told the court that in October 2002 he got an application form for naturalisation at the Department of Justice but an official never informed him that changes were due.

Mr Justice Thomas Smyth reserved judgment.

€1,000 bail on rape, assault charges

A Monaghan man has been remanded on €1,000 bail after pleading not guilty to a series of charges under the Criminal Justice Act and the Rape Amendment Act at Monaghan District Court.

The charges include rape and buggery and the sexual assault of up to nine boys in recent years. The man (62) had previously been remanded on €2,000 bail on similar charges. Judge Seán McBride ordered that he should not be named and remanded him to appear again on June 6th.

Ten years for heroin possession

A man who told gardaí he found heroin valued at €31,000 in his back garden has been sentenced to 10 years by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. Darren Shevlin (30), Roberts Street, Dublin, pleaded guilty to possession of the drug in May last year.

Schoolgirl alleges festival rape

A Wicklow schoolgirl has told a jury in the Central Criminal Court she felt "horrible and disgusting" after being raped at a summer festival in Arklow in July 2004 when she was 14 years old. The 18-year-old accused man has pleaded not guilty to four charges of rape and sexual assault.
