Obstetricians to challenge findings

Two of the three obstetricians found guilty of professional misconduct by the Medical Council recently over reports they prepared in 1998 exonerating the practice of Drogheda obstetrician Dr Michael Neary are to challenge the findings in the High Court.

Prof Walter Prendiville and Dr John Murphy have initiated High Court proceedings with a view to seeking a judicial review of the Medical Council decision. The case is due before the President of the High Court, Mr Richard Johnson, on March 12th.

Man killed in quad bike crash

Gardaí in Co Waterford have appealed for witnesses to a collision that claimed the life of a 31-year-old American early yesterday morning. The man, whose name hasn't been released until next-of-kin in the US have been informed, lost control of his quad bike on a secondary road near Dungarvan.

The single man, who had been living and working in the area for a number of months, was discovered by a passing motorist.

Irish Embassy to open in UAE

The Cabinet decided at its weekly meeting yesterday to open an Irish Embassy in the United Arab Emirates. The decision to open the embassy, which will be located in Abu Dhabi, reflects the growing links with the UAE.

UAE national airline Etihad announced recently that it would be initiating a service between Abu Dhabi and Dublin next August. Aer Lingus already operates a service to Dubai.

Cocaine found at Dublin airport

A man in his 60s is being questioned by gardaí after drugs worth more than €200,000 were seized at Dublin airport yesterday.

The man was arrested after arriving into Dublin on a flight from Zurich. Gardaí recovered three kilos of cocaine.

Elderly man's body found in river

Gardaí are treating as an accident the death of an elderly man whose body was found in a river in Sixmilebridge, Co Clare, early yesterday. He was named locally as 81-year- old Thomas McInerney.

Gardaí want to identify woman

Gardaí in Ballymun, Dublin, are appealing for assistance in identifying the body of a woman found on the Sillogue Road at 9pm on Sunday last.

She was in her late 30s or early 40s, 170cm in height, with long light brown hair and green-grey eyes. She was wearing a black jacket and jeans.
