Woman accused of murdering baby

A Fermanagh woman who is accused of murdering her baby son is alleged to have strangled him moments after he was born before wrapping him in a towel and leaving his body in her kitchen.

Wendy Johnston (34) Spruce Hill, Irvinestown, is accused of murdering her baby on February 20th after giving birth to him on her living room sofa.

A detective said that when she was charged, she replied: "Not guilty." She was remanded in custody until March 27th.

Crown lawyer Charles McKay told the High Court in Belfast that her sister, Caroline Breen, had called police to Ms Johnston's address at 10pm on February 22nd. Ms Breen had received a phone call from her sister and when she arrived, she found Ms Johnston lying on a sofa.

Mr McKay said she told Ms Breen she had given birth two days ago before, leading her into the kitchen and showing her the body of the baby boy wrapped in a bundle of towels.

Mr McKay said a post- mortem examination on February 24th showed the baby had died due to strangulation. The report indicated bruising to his shoulder and neck and haemorrhaging to his face.

Ms Johnston was arrested on February 28th and interviewed by police. It is alleged she told detectives none of her family knew she was pregnant.

Mr McKay said she told police she did not go near the baby after his birth or contact anyone for help but stayed in her home until February 22nd, when she went out at 7pm to buy a bottle of vodka, which she drank before telephoning her sister. He said Ms Johnston had a history of self-harm and alcohol abuse.
