Icy road conditions brought chaos to the roads of Donegal yesterday morning, leaving at least 100 cars stranded in the north of the county.

Many motorists were forced to abandon their cars on routes from Meena Cross, Glenswilly and Meenatinny in and out of Letterkenny.

The situation improved after Donegal County Council workers gritted the road but conditions were still treacherous.

Motorists in the county have been advised to exercise continuing caution this morning after another night of sub-zero temperatures.

Met Éireann is expecting temperatures to rise to between six and 10 degrees later today, bringing an end to the recent cold snap.

The bad weather yesterday also caused disruption to ferry services.

There was also severe disruption on the Irish Ferries route between Rosslare and Cherbourg. The MV Normandy is expected to arrive late back into Rosslare port this morning after being delayed because of bad weather.
