Several hundred people took part in an anti-war protest in Dublin city centre this afternoon. Protesters were calling on the US and Britain not to initiate war against Iraq.

Protesters did not march up Grafton Street as planned, due to a Garda ban. Gardai said that the decision had been taken for public safety reasons.

However, protesters later staged a rally, which passed off without incident, near the American Embassy in Ballsbridge.
