Eleven inmates in a mental institution were admitted into a Hong Kong hospital and will be tested for SARS, a government spokeswoman said today.

"All 11 have respiratory problems such as fever and coughs. They're now under observation and in stable condition," the spokeswoman said. "We're testing them if they have SARS," she said.

The development came about one month after the World Health Organization declared Hong Kong free of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome virus, which killed about 300 people and ravaged its economy since March.
