Parts of Monaghan and Cavan were severely flooded after heavy rainfall today.

Firefighters were called to pump flood water out of a number of premises near Castleblaney and construction of parts of the Castleblaney by-pass also had to be suspended.

Developers Gama-Tubin have fenced off the site of a bridge being constructed at Tullyvin in order to facilitate pumping but it could be several days before construction work can continue.

The Dublin Road area of the town was also extremely badly hit with many traders facing losses due to damaged stock.

Serious flooding was also reported in the Clones and Ballybay areas of Co Monaghan and in low-lying areas near Cootehill and Shercock in Co Cavan.

Some farmland was left underwater.
