An internal investigation is taking place in the naval base at Haulbowline, in Cork, into the possible issuing of irregular invoices for food, reports Jim Cusack, Security Correspondent.
It is understood a number of personnel have been moved from their normal section of the Naval Service while the inquiries are taking place.
The investigation, which is being carried out by the Military Police, is understood to have begun about three weeks ago.
A spokesman for the Department of Defence yesterday confirmed that an investigation was taking place and that it involved "alleged irregularities in ration accounts mainly involving foods, fruit and vegetable contracts".
The Garda in Cork has been informed but is not, as yet, involved.
The spokesman confirmed that naval staff had been moved from their positions but said this was not an inference of guilt or involvement in illegal or irregular activities.
