Mayo exacted some revenge on Kerry for last year's All-Ireland final pasting with a winning start to their national league campaign in Castlebar.
Although far removed from the intensity of championship action, the victory was still well merited by a Mayo side that worked hard for each other in every department.
Man-of-the-match Peadar Gardiner inspired the home side against a Kerry team that was far from its fluent best.
Gardiner chipped in with three points on the day, Alan Dillon scored four and Mayo were full value for those scores.
John Maughan's side led by a point at the break, 0-6 to 0-5, and extended that advantage in the second half when half forward Pat Harte found the net in the 59th minute. It proved a crucial score.
Although Kerry were far from their best, both Brian Sheehan and Colm Cooper showed flashes off brilliance.
But whatever hopes the All-Ireland champions harboured of pegging back the home side were blown in that second period when Kieran Donaghy was dismissed for a second yellow.
Mayo themselves finished with fourteen men when Trevor Mortimer was sent off on a second yellow card offence.
