London - A £20 million RAF Harrier jump jet crashed near an airbase yesterday seconds after the pilot ejected to safety, sparking claims that it could have caused a nuclear disaster. Anti-nuclear activists said the aircraft was just 800 yards from crashing into a nuclear convoy being stored at RAF Wittering, Cambridgeshire - risking "a mini Chernobyl".
