Militant Palestinian groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad vowed today to pursue its campaign against the Israeli occupation by all possible means.

"Hamas will not accept any document that does not give it the right of resistance on all Palestinian lands," Gaza Hamas leader Mr Ismail Abu Shanab said.

Asked if the resistance included the use of suicide bombings, he said it did.

Islamic Jihad also said today it would not stop its attacks inside Israel. "Islamic Jihad will continue its resistance to the occupation, even if we reach an agreement on the document under discussion, which focuses on forging a united Palestinian leadership and not halting such attacks," said top Jihad leader Mr Mohammed al-Hindi.

He was speaking a day after Palestinian officials had hinted Hamas could sign up to a proposal to end attacks inside Israel in a bid to defuse 22 months of violence and return to peace talks.

The main Palestinian factions met last night to discuss the idea, with an official from Mr Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement saying the main PLO faction had subscribed to it.
