Half million pledged to help victims of troubles

The British government today announced it was giving £500,000 sterling to help victims of the troubles in Northern Ireland.

The funding was announced by Victims Minister in the Northern Ireland Office Mr Des Browne when he visited the Tim Parry-Johnathan Ball Young People's Centre in Warrington, Cheshire.

The centre, known locally as the Peace Centre, was set up by Mr Tim Parry's father, Colin, after his son and Johnathan were killed in the 1993 IRA bomb attack in Warrington town centre.

Half the £500,000 sum will fund The Legacy Project, an initiative of the Tim Parry-Johnathan Ball Trust, which works to identify and meet the needs of survivors of the troubles.

The remaining £250,000 has not yet been allocated but a number of schemes were being considered.

"The Legacy Project will provide support in areas where it is most needed and will provide an opportunity to forge new links between Great Britain and Northern Ireland," said Mr Browne.
