Two men wearing balaclavas and armed with handguns held up the Bank of Ireland branch, in the Parkway shopping centre on the Dublin Road in Limerick yesterday morning. The sound of a shot was heard and gardai suspect a blank may have been fired.

The men escaped with £4,500 but abandoned one bag containing £1,800 after a device activated and dyed the money. A third man drove the raiders away in an Opel Corsa car, which was found abandoned.
