Gremlins affect AIB's 24-hour banking

AIB's 24-hour banking system shut down for over an hour yesterday afternoon due to a technical problem.

AIB's 24-hour banking system shut down for over an hour yesterday afternoon due to a technical problem.

Customers who rang AIB's telephone banking number between about 2 p.m. and 3.20 p.m. yesterday were told it was not possible to process their requests.

People who entered their registration numbers and personal access codes online were unable to make any transactions.

The bank apologised to customers. A spokesman said it was due to a temporary slowdown in the system, which he said happened from time to time.

The spokesman stressed that no breach of security had occurred.
