Athens - Greece has discovered its first case of mad cow disease, Agriculture Minister, Mr Georges Anomeritis, said yesterday.

The sick Holstein cow was detected in an abattoir in the regional capital Serres, the minister said. All 46 cattle in the herd have been destroyed and incinerated, said Mr Anomeritis It is the first case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or mad cow disease, in Greece which between January 1 and June 30 this year carried out 6,703 tests on cattle, all negative.
