Cork received some bad news yesterday with the announcement of the closure of Waters Munster Glass on the northside of the city with the loss of 80 jobs.

The Churchfield-based firm had gone into receivership but it had been hoped a deal would be struck with a new buyer.

Forty-one employees had their contracts terminated with immediate effect with the remainder losing their jobs in the coming weeks. The workers will only receive statutory redundancy.

The firm worked on private residential, shop and pub projects, as well as major commercial and industrial projects. This is the second major closure in the glass industry in Cork in the last year. In April 2011, 16 people lost their jobs following the closure of Waters Glass and Glazing Ltd in Togher on the southside of the city.
