A bomb planted at the home of a Northern Ireland prison officer was unwittingly carried inside by his 10-year-old daughter, it has emerged .

The child picked up the device after finding it in the garden of the house in Bangor, Co Down.

It had been thrown at the Brunswick Road address overnight but failed to detonate, police said.

"It was several hours before her parents realised what it was and alerted the police," a police spokesman said. British army experts defused the bomb.

Earlier this month, prison officers' homes in east Belfast were targeted by pipe bombers.
