European indoor 400 metres champion David Gillick continued his excellent form outdoors when he smashed the Irish record at the Atletica Geneve meeting in Switzerland.

In a tight finish to the race he held off a strong challenge from Andrew Steele with another British athlete, Martyn Rooney, finishing third.

Gillick went to the top of the European rankings with a time of 45.23 seconds, a significant improvement on the Irish national record of 45.58secs posted by Paul McKee five years ago.

Steele pushed Gillick to the wire, setting a lifetime best by just 0.08secs, with Rooney posting a time of 46.02secs.
