I had to leave from London, so booked my return flight to Stuttgart on-line with Expedia for u£99 stg (expedia.co.uk). Unsure about connections to Strasbourg, I posted a query on Lonely Planet's Thorn Tree site (lonelyplanet.co.uk) and got a reply from someone in Stuttgart telling me how long it took to get from the airport to the railway station to make my connection. He also gave me the German Railways website (www.bahn.de) which in turn gave me not only a timetable but also a route planner, telling me where to change, what platform to make for, and which trains I could take my bike on. Couldn't have been simpler. I left Heathrow at 7 a.m. and arrived in Strasbourg at 1.10 p.m. for a total cost, ex-London, of u£139. With more time to surf, I could have travelled for less, with a flight from Dublin to Paris and on to Strasbourg by French railways.
