The German pair of Alex Cejka and Marcel Siem took an early lead in WGC World Cup at Kiawah Island today, carding a five-under 67, one shot ahead of an impressive Wales team.
However, the fancied Irish combination of Padraig Harrington and Paul McGinley finished the day on a disappointing 2-over, leaving in the bottom half of the field.
Despite opening well, carding birdies on the first and second, a run of five bogies in ten holes scuppered any hopes of the pair taking an early lead, in a competition they won in 1997.
At the top of the table six birdies on the part of the Germans was enough to see them on top of the pile at the end of the first day's play.
For their part, Ian Woosnam and Bradley Dredge of Wales were near-perfect opening round partners.
The pair teamed for a four-under-par 68 and were the earlyfirst round leaders at The Ocean Course.
