Gas man of the Gaiety

ON MONDAY, comedian Brendan O'Carroll packed out the Gaiety, as his Mrs Browne series took a new but familiar twist. Watching this master of the gurriers-behaving-sadly genre, the house exploded uproariously with every expletive and, on the off-chance that it might wear thin for some, a little social commentary was dished up giving the audience something to chew over, however briefly.

At the interval Angelica Huston slinked into the night sending the rumour-mill into overdrive. Glitterati in the know wondered whether la vendetta had arrived for O'Carroll, and curious onlookers were informed that she was a little miffed by his reported criticism of her direction of The Mammy.

Eamonn Coughlan proved a bit of a slow starter in the 10-metre dash to the bar, and was well beaten by a stampede of drinkers who had obviously been putting in the training. Contentedly supping pints well before Eamonn were Marty Whelan and his wife Maria, along with Open House co-presenter Mary Kennedy and producer John Masterson. Also on the beer were Larry Gogan, model Vivienne Connolly, and her boyfriend Tony Carter of the Carter twins.
