Gardai to protect post service

Gardai are to accompany postal deliveries to O'Malley Park in Limerick from today.

Gardai are to accompany postal deliveries to O'Malley Park in Limerick from today.

The move follows attacks on postmen. One had a gun pointed at him, and another was hospitalised after he was beaten with an iron bar.

The postmen withdrew their services to the housing estate last week, and more than 500 houses in the Southill estate were left without a delivery.

Following a meeting between An Post, gardai and the estate management committee, organised by the Labour TD Ms Jan O'Sullivan on Friday, gardai agreed to accompany the postmen.
