Gardaí investigating the death of man who's body was found in the Royal Canal in Dublin today appealed for landlords and house-owners to check rented accommodation for tenants who may have gone missing.

Superintendent John Leahey also asked people from ethnic communities to come forward with any information they may have on the man's death.

Gardaí this morning sealed off another portion of the canal at Binn's Bridge on the junction of Dorset St and Drumcondra Road.

A Garda sub-aqua team is continuing to search along the canal and CCTV footage from the area is also being assessed.

The remains, which are those of a black male aged between 20 and 30, were found partially wrapped in black plastic in the Royal Canal in Ballybough, near Croke Park, by a passerby on Wednesday evening.

A post mortem examination on the body showed the man had suffered a number of stab wounds to his body. All the dead man's limbs had been detached from the body, and his head has not yet been found.

A number of items of clothing found with the body were put on display at Fitzgibbon Street Garda station, including an Ireland football jersey, a pair of socks and a pair of underpants.

Superintendent Leahey said the long-sleeved white football top was found near the body while the socks and underpants were found on the body.

Gardaí believe the man was killed elsewhere before his body was dumped, and they are keen to find the murder scene as quickly as possible.

The superintendent said officers believed the body had been in the canal for between one to two weeks. "We can't be 100 per cent certain on that, but it is somewhere between one to two weeks," he said.

Gardaí have yet to identify the man or where he was originally from. A number of fingerprints were recovered from the scene and detectives are in touch with officers at the National Immigration Bureau in a bid to identify the man.

Anyone with information which might assist the Garda is asked to contact the incident room at Fitzgibbon Street in Dublin on 01-6668400.

The remains were discovered at the same stretch of the canal - near Ballybough Bridge in the north inner city - where the badly beaten body of a Romanian man, Adrian Bestea, was found stuffed into a suitcase in 2001.
