GARDAÍ WERE questioning a man in Galway city last night after an assault on a 28-year-old man in the early hours of yesterday morning.
Barry Mannion, Clybaun, Galway, was transferred to Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, and his condition was described as “very serious”.
The incident is believed to have occurred just before 3.30am at the junction of Upper Dominic Street and Henry Street. Mr Mannion was standing on a footpath when a car pulled up. A row ensued and he suffered a serious assault.
His attacker then drove off and may have been travelling with others in the vehicle.
Garda forensic experts sealed off the area and conducted a technical examination.
A 23-year-old man was arrested in the afternoon and taken to Mill Street Garda station for questioning.
He was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, and can be held for up to 24 hours.
Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to the incident, as it is believed there were a number of people in the city centre area at that time who may have seen something.
