Gardai name canoeists drowned in River Barrow

A post mortem is being carried out today on two men who drowned in the River Barrow in south Carlow yesterday evening.

A post mortem is being carried out today on two men who drowned in the River Barrow in south Carlow yesterday evening.

Gardaí this afternoon named the men as Mr Martin Roche (34) from Rockingham, Ferrybank, Co Waterford and Noel Byrne (27) from Kiltegan, Co Wicklow.

The two were among of a group of five people canoeing in the river yesterday  when they got into difficulties.

They were last seen going over a weir near the village of St Mullins. The alarm was raised at 6.30 p.m.

Emergency services including the search-and-rescue helicopter from Waterford were called out. The bodies of two men were recovered at 9.30 p.m.

Gardaí from Thomastown Co Kilkenny are investigating.
