GARDAI investigating the murder of Mr David Nugent (22), whose body was found in Clonmel on Tuesday with stab wounds and bound hand and foot, are continuing house-to-house inquiries in the area.

They have also brought a small digger into a patch of waste ground between Garrymore and Oliver Plunkett Terrace - not far from the overgrown field where the body was found at Heywood Terrace.

Insp Tadhg Browne said they were still looking for the knife used to murder Mr Nugent, and they are also searching for his runners and a wallet he was carrying at the time.

Insp Browne said that robbery was still high on the list of motives for the killing.

Mr Nugent appeared before Clonmel District Court in March on charges of possessing cannabis and this has heightened speculation about a possible drugs link to the murder.

The gardai are anxious to hear from anyone who passed by Heywood Road after 11 p.m. on Monday night or anyone who was on the nearby hospital grounds between 11 p.m. and 12.30 a.m.

They are also appealing to a few people who have contacted them anonymously in the last few days to do so again. They are assured confidentiality.

Mr Nugent was buried at St Patrick's Cemetery, Clonmel, yesterday, following Requiem Mass at St Oliver's Church.

In his homily, Father Tom Griffin PP appealed for people to co-operate with the Government, the Garda and everyone working for justice. He said this was a Christian calling and a Christian duty.

"The country needs people now to work for justice," he added. During the prayers of the faithful, Father Griffin also prayed that "these people who had committed this cruel and evil deed" would be delivered from evil.

The mourners included an Ceann Comhairle, Mr Sean Treacy, near whose home Mr Nugent's body was discovered.

Father Griffin said that those who knew the late David Nugent knew him 10 be a good-hearted young man.
