Gardaí investigating the activities of dissident republicans are to prepare a file for the Director of Public Prosecutions after last night releasing without charge two men arrested over the weekend.

The men, a 45-year-old from Blackrock on Cork’s south side and a 32-year-old from St Luke’s on the city’s north side, were arrested during an operation on Saturday morning. Both men were arrested during a search of isolated woodland at Leamlara between Carrigtwohill and Watergrasshill in east Cork at about 8.30am on Saturday. Detectives also recovered a handgun in the woodland which has been sent to Dublin for examination by Garda ballistics experts.

The two men were detained under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act. Both were released without charge before 7pm last night and gardaí will now prepare a file for the DPP. Gardaí said the arrests were part of an ongoing investigation into the activities of dissident republicans who have admitted responsibility in the past two years for the murder of two drug dealers in Cork.
