Gardaí in Coolock, Dublin, were last night hoping to interview a 25-year-old man who was shot in front of his three-year-old daughter on Wednesday night.

Graham Stewart, who is originally from Belcamp, was leaving his car with his daughter at around 10pm when he was approached by a man at Castle Elms apartments, off Greencastle Road in Coolock.

The man fired a number of shots at him, hitting him once in the leg, before escaping in a waiting car driven by a second man.

People living in the apartment complex told The Irish Times yesterday that Mr Stewart collapsed on steps outside one of the townhouses in the apartment complex.

Gardaí conducted an extensive forensic investigation of the scene of the shooting yesterday and are believed to have recovered a number of bullet casings.

Mr Stewart was taken to Beaumont Hospital by ambulance, where his condition was said to be stable last night.

His three-year-old daughter, who was treated for shock after the incident but who escaped unharmed, is understood to have run to a nearby apartment following the attack. She is being looked after by relatives.

Mr Stewart, who is known to gardaí, has previously been the subject of at least one other attempt on his life. This occurred last November, also in the Coolock area, when shots were fired at himself and two others.

There were also reports yesterday that Mr Stewart may have been the target of an attempted pipe-bomb attack on a van parked in his driveway last year. However, gardaí could not confirm this.

Gardaí were last night hoping to interview Mr Stewart in an attempt to find out if he can provide any clues as to the identity of his attacker.

Officers investigating the attack were also yesterday examining a Nissan Skyline car that was found burnt out at the nearby Greenwood Avenue shortly after the shooting took place. It is thought this may have been the getaway car.

One woman living in the Castle Elms complex yesterday described hearing "loud bangs" shortly before 10pm on Wednesday evening. "I was sick with worry last night," she told The Irish Times. "I called the police and an ambulance, and then I called my mother."
