A garda sergeant charged with unlawful possession of a firearm in 1998 was further remanded on bail at Letterkenny District Court yesterday.

Sgt John White (47), Dreenan, Ballybofey, Co Donegal, was granted legal aid and cautioned to notify the DPP of any alibi within 14 days before he was remanded on bail to Letterkenny Circuit Court for trial on January 29th, 2002.

Sgt White is the only member of the force in Donegal to be arrested as a result of the Carty investigations into alleged corruption.

The Carty inquiry was initiated after members of the McBrearty family in Raphoe complained of abuse of power by certain members of the force against them following the death of Raphoe cattle dealer, Richard Barron, in October 1996.
