Gardai are investigating whether a man who drowned fell or was thrown into the River Shannon in Limerick on Sunday night.

Mr Thomas Murphy (27), single, of Crossroads, Thomond gate, was making his way home with friends when he became embroiled in a row with another man near the Treaty Stone at 10.45 p.m.

The body was recovered by the Limerick Marine Rescue and Search Unit at 1.40 a.m. near Thomondbridge and was removed to Limerick Regional Hospital. A post-mortem examination was carried out yesterday by the deputy State pathologist.
