Galway gardaí are looking for two men in connection with an incident in Eyre Square which has left a man seriously ill in hospital.

The 20-year-old was on top of an ESB substation in the centre of the square at about 3.15 am when he fell off during a row, sustaining serious head injuries.

The man is currently in a critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit of University Hospital Galway.

Gardaí say further tests will be carried out on the man by doctors to ascertain the severity of his head injuries.

A senior Garda source said he was standing on the ESB substation when two more youths in their early twenties came along and became involved in an altercation.

The two youths fled the scene in the direction of Shop Street when the young man fell. They are described as being about 20 years of age.
