Gardaí are investigating the death of a child who fell from a top bunk and got caught between the bed and a wall.

The incident happened on Friday night/Saturday morning in the Kinnegad area of Co Westmeath.

A Garda spokesman said the incident was being treated as a “tragic, private accident”.

It is understood the child was a female and was found by her two-year-old brother who had been sleeping in the lower bunk. His cries alerted their mother.

Meanwhile, a man in his late 50s died on Saturday following an industrial accident in Co Kerry. It is understood he was working on a tractor tyre at a premises in Listry, Beaufort, when the accident happened, shortly after 12.30pm.

Meanwhile, police are investigating a death in Co Down. A 46-year-old man was found unconscious in Newtownards early yesterday. He died later in hospital.
