A 29-year-old garda injured in a shooting incident in Tralee, Co Kerry, has died at Kerry General Hospital.

A 29-year-old garda injured in a shooting incident in Tralee, Co Kerry, has died at Kerry General Hospital.

The officer, from Blarney, Co Cork, was in a critical condition following the incident in Tralee on Sunday.

He was fatally injured when he suffered a gunshot wound to the head from his official issue Garda handgun.

The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission was asked to investigate but confirmed it was not treating the incident as suspicious.

The garda was at home at the house he shared with his fiancee at Lis Ard on the Abbeydorney Road in Tralee when the shooting occurred.

His family, including his father, a retired garda, were at his bedside at the hospital when he died at about 9pm on Monday night.
