Gardaí serious about approach on Tuam girl

Detectives at Tuam Garda station are investigating a possible attempted abduction in the area over the weekend.

Detectives at Tuam Garda station are investigating a possible attempted abduction in the area over the weekend.

It is understood a girl was approached by strangers in a van in Belclare, a small rural village eight miles from Tuam. The girl was walking along a road in the area when a blue van pulled up.

A man asked her if she wanted a lift and to get in. However the girl, in her early teens, waved them away and the van drove off.

Members of the detective branch have been making inquiries. The incident occurred at 3.30pm on Friday.

A spokesman for Tuam Garda station said the matter was being treated very seriously. They are asking anyone who may have been in the area at the time and noticed anything suspicious to contact them.

"The matter could be quite innocent but we can't take the chance," he said. "We are treating the approach as very serious until we are satisfied that there was nothing untoward."
