GAA to receive €1.3m development grant

The Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, Mr O'Donoghue, will today announce an allocation of €1.34 million from the Irish Sports Council to the GAA.

The allocation is to fund investment in attracting greater participation among young people in Gaelic sports. The announcement will be made this afternoon at a GAA summer camp in Cahirciveen, Co Kerry.

This year alone, over 54,000 children will attend GAA summer camps in the 32 counties. Summer camps run by the GAA are one of the many projects supported by Irish Sports Council funding.

Alongside the Irish Sports Council funding the GGA will contribute €4.34 million in its underage strategy bringing to €5.68 million the total invested.Today's allocation will bring to €4.13 million the total allocated to the GAA since the introduction in 2001 of a special budget measure for the encouragement of greater underage participation.

The Irish Sports Council has invested €12.5 million to the three major sports organisations, the GAA, the IRFU, and the FAI to increase opportunities for school-aged children to participate in sport at local level.
