Longford Gaelic footballer David Barden has initiated High Court proceedings arising out of his sending-off in a recent tournament game. This followed a controversial encounter with a referee.

Mr Barden's case had not been reached when the court adjourned yesterday, and it may come up today.

Mr Barden was sent off when playing for his club, Clonguish, against Dublin's St Vincent's in a tournament game organised by the Longford Slashers club on April 9th.

A dispute has arisen over the circumstances of the sending-off but the red card means he cannot play for his county while the Games Administration Committee (GAC) is carrying out an investigation.

Mr Barden did not play for Longford in their Leinster championship defeat by Carlow on Sunday.

When the case wasn't reached yesterday, Mr Justice Kelly told Mr Barden's counsel, Mr Michael O'Donnell, that, if the matter was one of true urgency, an application could be made to the court this morning.

It is understood that when Mr Barden appeared before the GAC, he claimed the Longford Slashers' tournament was not a properly constituted competition under GAA rules because the competing clubs had not sought clearance from their county boards and provincial councils.

His argument was dismissed and the player has been summoned back to Croke Park tomorrow to be told the result of the GAC's deliberations.
