TWO OF the most experienced GAA managers have joined forces to raise awareness of the continuing high fatality rate on Irish roads.
Galway football boss Liam Sammon and Mayo manager John O’Mahony are to lead a campaign ahead of their sides’ meeting in the Connacht final in two weeks. The campaign has been launched by Mayo and Galway county councils ahead of the match in Pearse Stadium in Salthill on July 19th.
The “Slow Down for the Show Down” campaign asks motorists and passengers to make a personal commitment to drive at appropriate and legal speeds in a bid to tackle concerns about speeding in local communities.
O’Mahony, a Fine Gael TD, said excessive speed had caused untold trauma. “On the football pitch, speed is a necessity but excessive and inappropriate speed on the road is not fair play.”
Sammon said too many communities were put at risk by speeding motorists. “ We want motorists to think about their speed and how it might affect others as they pass through our communities,” said the retired teacher.
