Hundreds of mourners yesterday attended the funeral in Limerick of the Irish student killed two weeks ago in a bus crash in Peru.

There were tearful scenes at Ballybricken church when family and friends gathered to say farewell to David Scollard.

The Scollard family had to wait almost two weeks before David's remains were brought home from the South American country.

David, who was studying maths at UCD, was on a "trip of a lifetime" to Peru when the bus he was travelling in plunged 60 feet down an embankment on August 11th.

Five other people, all Peruvian nationals, were also killed in the accident and another 37 passengers were injured.

David's friend and travelling companion, David O'Grady - also a student at UCD - survived the crash and stayed on in Peru to accompany his friend's body home earlier this week.

This was the second tragedy for the Scollard family from Friarstown, Grange, in Co Limerick, who, five years ago, lost another son, Michael. The 20-year-old was killed in a road crash while returning home from a 21st birthday party on the outskirts of Limerick city in June 1999.

Yesterday, during his homily at the packed Ballybricken church, parish priest Fr Michael Hickey spoke of a young man who loved his family "unashamedly".

"We all know the details of David's death - David who was so energised for that enjoyment of life, David who was such a pleasant and a happy person with that engaging smile, David who loved his parents unashamedly and his family too.

"David who had tremendous and an admirable sense of security in his ability, himself and his home, David who was helpful and thoughtful," Fr Hickey said.

David is survived by his father, veterinary surgeon John Scollard, his mother, Olive, his brother, Shane, and sisters Olivia, Sarah and Joanne.

He was laid to rest yesterday next to the grave of his brother, Michael, at Mount St Oliver Cemetery in Limerick.
